Wind looked a bit lighter than past few days so to help me stay upwind took
out the 79 wave which has a bigger fin. Was well powered up at times, and
it was definitely easier to drive the 79 upwind than the 78 which has a 2cm
smaller fin, but still wasn't planing at times on many of the runs and
hence spent most of the session much further downwind than I wanted to.
Only on 2 occasions in the 1.5 hour session did I make enough ground upwind
to be able to gybe on the inside. Very frustrating.
I didn't put my own harness lines on the boom either which was a mistake.
On one side (starboard - going out) they were too short, and on the other
they were too long, and kept on getting longer as I was sailing. So was not
always fully comfortable in the harness whilst sailing.
Conditions, like yesterday, were lighter with much smaller waves than in
previous days this week (although the waves did get bigger later on with
the rising tide after I had come off the water). The stronger winds of last
week seemed to coincide with the run-up to the full moon which was 2 days
ago. Some people have suggested that since we are closer to the moon here
on the equator it affects things like the wind more; dunno if this is true.
Anyway, if the wind remains like this for the rest of the week until I
leave next Saturday, I might take out the 85L freestyle wave for one
session to make sure I stay upwind easily, and really try and nail my gybes
so that I pull off some fully planing efforts on the inside before I leave.
Also lots of early nights this week methinks and full concentration on the
windsurfing. Today I was feeling pretty cream-crackered after a couple of
later ones, and it definitely didn't do my sailing any good.
